Location Services

The immigration process is often traumatic and disruptive. Families are separated, friends scattered and lines of communication severed. Recognizing the importance of helping long lost relatives and friends find one another, HIAS Chicago assists clients with local, national and international location searches.

If you are looking for someone with whom you have lost contact (or wish to establish contact), HIAS Chicago can conduct a search in the U.S. and/or abroad. You must provide some basic information about the person you are seeking, such as first and last name, birthdate and birthplace, country of immigration, and when contact last occurred.

Please note the following:

HIAS Chicago only has access to agency documents from 1909 through today and we would need to contact the national HIAS organization for assistance with reviewing these documents.

  • If you need information about someone who arrived in the United States with the help of HIAS Chicago prior to 1909, we will not have related documents.
  • We cannot guarantee that all of our searches will be successful.
  • Searches may take several months to more than a year.
  • Please call HIAS Chicago at 312-357-4666 and ask for Location Services.
